Learn About Matthews, NC
Settled on land in between Charlotte and Monroe, the geographic area now seen on maps as Matthews was originally unspoiled rolling woodlands with an abundance of trees. This land was inviting and rich to the early settlers of the area, primarily farmers in the early 19th century. Trading trails and game-rich hunting grounds were nearby, as well as ancestral homes of both Catawba and Waxhaw Indians. Farmers cleared the land for their planting and quickly discovered that cotton grew pretty well, becoming the most lucrative crop. The nickname of Stumptown came about from many tree stumps left on the ground from early settlement.
Matthews Development & Growth
The population was surging, stores were being built and opening, and Matthews was on the path to turning into a bustling community. Only eight merchants were listed in 1884 Matthews. Edward Solomon Reid built the Reid House in 1890. It’s now mainly used for specialty events in its charming Queen Anne Victorian style. It stayed in the Reid family for nearly a century but is now owned solely by the Matthews Historical Foundation. The late 1800s were when the Funderburk General Merchandise Store got built, and it to this day has the original brick walls and tin ceiling. Cotton gins were quite busy handling local harvests by 1901. The heart of Matthews included a bank, three general stores, a hotel, a blacksmith shop, a livery stable, a gristmill, and a drug store. A privately-owned switchboard brought the first telephones to town for just under two dozen subscribers.
The modern population of Matthews numbers more than 30,000 people. In keeping up the pace with regional development, the city limits of Matthews are now roughly 17 square miles encompassing a hospital, recreational facilities, shopping, restaurants, and hotels. The National Register of Historic Places added 10 downtown buildings from Matthews. Called the Matthews Commercial District, they form a tiny yet surprisingly intact gathering of structures built in the late 19th or early 20th centuries.
In 1880, Matthews counted 191 citizens. Now, the population is over 30,000. Despite that, what was true back in 1879 remains true to this very day: Matthews is a unique place to work, live, and raise your family.
