Facts About Monroe, NC
To honor President James Monroe it was decided by the North Carolina General Assembly that they would place a county seat close to Union County. That took place in 1842. Within a couple of years, the town of Monroe was able to incorporate. They did so in December of 1844.
Commercial standings improved for this town when the Carolina Railroad was built between Wilmington and Charlotte. This was done in 1874 and was just 30 years after it was incorporated. The trains would bring in manufactured goods and these things were often exchanged for the areas regional agricultural products. Eventually, it attracted a large amount transients called Railwaymen.
Because the town was well known for its wholesale commerce it also attracted traveling salesmen and the ‘Knights of the Grip’. Anyone who was traveling from the south to the Northern part of the U.S. or North to the Southern part of the U.S. would often stop in Monroe because it was often a halfway point. The town became well known for its southern hospitality. Heath Houston Realty company decided to invest in a modern Hotel that had 100 guest rooms and they called it Hotel Joffrey to honor a general from World War 1. The hotel was located on the corner of West Franklin and North Main streets.
When the Depression hit the area in the early 1930s, it all but stopped the development of the downtown area. In part, the town was sustained by Camp Sutton which was a military base established during World War II which brought soldiers and their families to the area. For that reason, the military base help sustain the economy.
From that time until present a couple of historical buildings were destroyed such as the opera house and Hotel Joffrey but most of the business district has been able to maintain the buildings built during that early prosperity. The city still has retail and industrial activity and it keeps a focus on commerce within the county. The downtown area is attracting commerce and travelers. The city has invested millions of dollars into improvements and annual festivals. The city invites you to enjoy downtown Monroe.
