A Brief History Of Waxhaw Town
The Town of Waxhaw is situated approximately 3 miles from the South Carolina state line and about 20 minutes from south Charlotte.
Waxhaw dates back to the 1700s and is one of Union County’s oldest towns. It takes its name from the Waxhaws (originally known as Wysacky), who were a Native American group of people that were the region’s original inhabitants. The Spanish conquistador Juan Pardo was the first European to record establishing contact with the group.
The Waxhaw aided the North Carolina colonialists in 1711 in their war against the Tuscarora. This decision the antagonized the allies of the Tuscarora in New York who subsequently started to raid the Waxhaw tribe.
The raids by the Tuscarora allies continued until 1715 when the Waxhaw joined in the Yamasee war effort against the South Carolina colony. The involvement of the tribe in the War resulted in their annihilation at the hands of the Catawba allies of South Carolina as well as the releasing of their land for European settlement.
European-Americans first settled in the area in the mid-18th century. The majority of settlers were of Scot-Irish and German origin. The settlers eventually became subsistence farmers and had a reputation for being independent.
The 7th President of the United States Andrew Jackson, was born close to Waxhaw in the year 1767. Consensus has never been reached with regards to which of the Carolinas his birthplace was due to the proximity to the border.
In 1888, the railroad arrived, which created access to the Atlanta markets and helped the town become prosperous. The tracks of the railroad were laid through the town’s center to show how important the railroad was to the community. It still stands in the center of the town although it is currently bordered by a green grassy strip.
Waxhaw was chartered in 1889 and established itself as one of Union County’s oldest towns. It has a population of over 10,500 people and has managed to maintain the small town feel and charm and continues achieving quality growth. At the heart of Waxhaw town is the Historic District, which boasts unique attractions and proud old buildings and is on the National Register of Historic Places.
